The Starry Night of Sorrow
"La tristesse durera toujours. (The sadness will last forever.)"
Created some of the world's most famous art but died believing he was a failure, having sold only one painting.
Vincent van Gogh painted the world not as it was, but as he felt it. His swirling skies and vibrant sunflowers were a desperate attempt to communicate the beauty he saw, even as darkness consumed his mind.
Tormented by mental illness, he maimed himself and voluntarily entered an asylum. There, he painted "The Starry Night," a masterpiece born of suffering.
At age 37, feeling he was a burden to his brother Theo, he walked into a wheat field and shot himself. His last words epitomized his tragic existence.
